The city is situated 32 km southeast of Lisbon, on the north bank of the mouth of the River Sado, and is flanked to the west by the Serra da Arrábida. The urbanized area is approximately 10 square kilometers.

Setúbal is the seat of a county of 170.57 km ² and 121,185 inhabitants (2011) 2, divided into eight parishes. The municipality is bordered to the north and east by the municipality of Palmela in the west of Sesimbra and the south, the Sado estuary connects the municipalities of Alcacer do Sal and Grândola. The Troia Peninsula is located in front of the city, on the Atlantic coast. It lies at the southern end of the central region of Portugal, marking the border with the South of Portugal.
